Students in DR and DC fly messages of hope, Skype

The wind was blowing stronger in the arid southwest part of Dominican Republic than in Washington, DC, on March 21st, so the Pedro Corto students saw their kites lifted into the breeze while the César Chavez Prep Charter School students determinedly carried their kites around the schoolyard.

This was the first time that Pedro Corto and César Chavez Prep students participated in Talking Kites All Over the World. The annual event is a project of the International Education and Resource Network (iEARN). The spring equinox was chosen for Talking Kites Day as the date when day and night are equal throughout the world. Along with 25,000 students from around the globe, the Dominican Republic and U.S. students tied slips with messages of hope for a better world onto kites and sent them soaring.

The Pedro Corto students wrote messages wishing for: No more violence. Take good care of animals. No more garbage. No more deforestation. For all to be equal. More baseball leagues (to give more Dom Reps the opportunity to get good enough to become rich baseball stars in the United States.)

The Washington, DC students hoped for: Everyone to be treated equally. Lots of shelters for people who are homeless. Someday war will end. Every culture will unite.

Plan International organized the Pedro Corto students’ participation at the local Community Technology Centre. Peter Marsden and Karine Welsh are the César Chavez Prep teachers. The two groups partnered because César Chavez Prep volunteer Cathy Healy was in Dominican Republic on March 21st giving a workshop on Talking Kites Day with Carlos Miranda Levy, Educar.org. The students linked up between flying and marching their kites for a video chat via Skype. The 12-year-olds from two countries a world away shared their similar messages of hope and smiled and waved.

Chavez ninth graders Fanny Valencia and Nhi Iam from the Global Media class filmed and produced a video on their event that can be found on the César Chavez Prep’s website.

DC’s Chavez Prep 6th graders talk nuclear radiation — with those who experienced disasters personally

Do you have three minutes to feel inspired?

I’ve just made a short video about the day that every single one of the Chavez Prep sixth graders was face-to-face with someone who had been to a nuclear disaster while the radiation was fresh and dangerously “hot.” (See video.)

Wait until you see these 11-year-olds listen…so serious, so eager to learn more. And, so respectful of Mike Edwards, a retired National Geographic editor who covered the Chernobyl disaster over several years for the magazine, and Carlos Miranda Levy, founder of Relief 2.0 with Stanford University’s Peace Innovation Lab, who has been several times to the Fukushima area.

Mike and Carlos are both good friends of mine. In fact,Mike was my journalism mentor from the beginning when he encouraged me to switch from PR to journalism. Carlos was a fellow Fellow in the Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship at Stanford. (Carlos, who lives in the Dominican Republic, was a year ahead of me.)

What you’ll see on the video is the reality. To my delight, Mike was astonished by his experience. This was the first time he’d been in a DC public school, and of course, he’s read horror stories about them for years. He confessed afterwards, that he had expected controlled chaos. Instead, he found “courteousness” and “intelligence.” He was still praising the students the next day at our monthly NG retiree luncheon.

TEDxWomen — Message to Port au Prince: Best References for Making Digital Stories

TEDxWomen@PortauPrince was a success. A modest but very engaged audience enjoyed the live presentations by Emeline Desert and Cathy Healy. Students from the Ecole Supérieure d’Infotronique d’Haïti (ESIH) became interested in the MUCI Solidarity Kitchens model presented by Emeline and the audience shared with Cathy how storytelling is an important element in Haitian culture. More details soon… 🙂

Carlos’ summary proves the point of my TEDx talk: Skype is like life — real communication comes through sharing stories. I didn’t know that storytellers were and still are part of the Haitian culture until my talk, which fortunately was more of a Q&A. Now that I know about Haitian skill in storytelling, I will always remember it, because I will connect that information with the sight of strangers willing to stay late to listen to me talk about storytelling and who started talking about taking action and beginning to teach digital storytelling.

I can’t wait to see what happens next. Now that will be a story!

In their quest, the Haitians might be able to use practical information about how to teach digital storytelling, so I’m about to post this to Carlos’ Facebook wall:

1) Digital Storytelling started in the San Francisco area with what is now the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS). Joe Lambert, the founder and still the head of CDS is the master of the discipline. He and his team and have practical advice that is helpful, especially for community groups. The head of our Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship Program at Stanford, Stuart Gannes, is on the Center’s board. (Carlos and I met as Fellows and I did my training through CDS.)

2) Jason Ohler used digital storytelling brilliantly in his classroom in Alaska. He’s gone on to become a workshop guru and wrote a superb, practical, $$$$ book that I use. I also use his website, which has a tremendous amount of good, free advice.

3) In Haiti, you must be especially careful because Digital Storytelling can deepen trauma. Brain research shows that a trauma makes a new, deep channel in your brain. Re-imagining the details will deepen and widen that channel, and digital storytelling is emotionally powerful. You have to think hard about how to tell a story in 200 words (about a three-minute video), what to put in, what to leave out. You have to imagine intensely about what images will show the trauma and you have to remember what sound effects and music to use to convey your feelings.

The South Africans have a way to help you use the storytelling power to turn trauma into a new positive brain channel. Psychiatrists there developed a serious of lessons for their children, many of whom were AIDs orphans and/or had been abused, robbed, beaten, raped in the violence. Using the lessons, called “My Hero,” children create a book that leads them through their trauma and focuses on how they are heroes because they survived and are thriving. These books could also be scanned and made into videos. Steve Vosloo in Capetown, a fellow Fellow, was working with the My Hero psychiatrists for his Stanford project. Steve is generous and kind.
